The USD 332 Board of Education met at 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 7, 2012, at the district office in Cunningham.  Present were Karl Werner, Kenny Glenn, Scott DeWeese, Renee Ruckle, Steve McKennon, and Brent Hansen, board members; Superintendent Glen Davis; Assistant Superintendent Suzan Patton; Principal Bob Stackhouse; Jeanette Soukup, Clerk; and guests: Donna Werner, Joyce Westerman, Marci Adams, and David Steffen.
The Board approved the evening’s agenda and President Werner welcomed the guests.  Minutes of the April 2, 2012 meeting were approved.
The Board approved the financial report and payment of bills in the amount of $271,833.89, including payroll.
Dr. Davis reported on legislative action since the last board meeting.  All the major issues affecting public education are still awaiting action.  This year’s session is scheduled to end Friday.   Dr. Davis discussed the district’s transportation needs with the Board.
Suzan Patton informed the Board that Michelle Popovich, Micah Bright, Kathy Hartley, Jerree Fitzsimmons, and Teri Scripsick had volunteered to be on the district’s Technology Committee.
Joyce Westerman and Marci Adams presented the Board with information on the MTSS – Multi-Tier System of Supports – a framework of the district to use to support the learning success of each child, regardless of the level of support needed.  MTSS was launched in USD 332 in November.  According to information provided by Mrs. Westerman, the program currently emphasizes improvement of reading skills and has been successful.  The MTSS framework can be used for school-wide support for children in the areas of math and behavior as well, but for now the local effort is emphasizing reading.
Steve McKennon reported on the recent SCK-SEC board meeting and talked about the special education co-op’s community-based training programs and business partners.  Copies of the minutes were included in the board member’s packets.
Principal Stackhouse reviewed his written report, highlighting activities planned for the last two weeks of school.  School awards programs will be held Tuesday, May 8, and the grade school music program is Tuesday evening.  The league high school track meet will be Thursday, May 10, at Fairfield, beginning at 3:00 o’clock.  Kindergarten visitation day is Friday, May 11.  High School Graduation is Friday, May 11, at 7:00 p.m.   Play Day is Monday afternoon, May 14.  Eighth Grade Commencement is Monday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m.   A retirement reception will be held on May 17 for retiring district personnel.  The high school Regional Track meet will be held at Montezuma-South Gray on Friday, May 18.  State Track is May 25 at Wichita State University.
The Board met in two executive sessions for a total of 30 minutes to discuss matters pertaining to non-elected personnel.
The Board approved a motion to accept the retirement notice from Rita Goetz.  A motion to accept the resignation as junior high cheer and pep club sponsor by Linda Kerschen was also accepted.  The Board approved a motion to accept the retirement notice from Pam Liebl.
With the upcoming wheat harvest approaching, the Board approved a motion to hold the next regular meeting of the USD 332 Board of Education at 8:00 a.m., Monday, June 4, at the district office in Cunningham.
The meeting adjourned at 8:37 p.m.
